After school clubs are back!

After school clubs are back!

The Explorer Lab is excited to offer another round of after school clubs for students in grades 2-5! These clubs feature a different theme of marine education each week, and incorporate games, crafts, trips to the beach, and live animals from the aquarium.

We are offering clubs 2 days a week, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 PM. Starting the week of October 2nd, ending the week of November 13th. Flexible drop-off time from 3:00 - 3:30 PM.

Oct 4/5 - Intro to Marine Biology

This week will be a broad introduction to the many different fields within marine biology, and the many ways to be involved with the ocean. We will have touch tanks with some iconic invertebrates, different stations featuring our coolest animals, and microscopes set up to check out the tiniest of creatures! This is the final week of aquarium operations, and we will get a chance to see all the animals before they are released!

Oct 11/12 - Crab Habitats & Ecosystems

We will be building various styles of homes for shore crabs out of rocks, sand, seaweed and sea water. We will then conduct a few scientific investigations to determine the habitat type they prefer the most. Please note: this day will likely include a trip to the beach (weather depending), and using materials directly from the beach. There is a chance that clothes and shoes may become dirty.

Oct 18/19 - Seaweeds

Often overlooked and tossed aside, seaweeds and algae are an important part of our local marine ecosystems! Along with phytoplankton, they create the base of the marine food web, and even humans have uses for some of the species. This week will include a trip to the beach for a seaweed scavenger hunt, so please dress for the weather, and clothes may get dirty.

Oct 25/26 - Ocean Mysteries

There is so much of the ocean yet to be discovered! We'll be learning about strange ocean noises, the Mariana Trench, the Bermuda Triangle, hydrothermal vent ecosystems and more. Students get to act as detectives and solve some "Explorer Lab" mysteries of their own!

Nov 1/2 - Deep Sea (Halloween Version)

We’re diving into the deep sea, and learning about all the crazy animals down there! Ever wonder how angler fish produce their light? Or what colour the animals are if sunlight can’t reach them? We will be putting a fun Halloween spin on the creatures of the deep, with some fun crafts and activities too.

Nov 8/9 - Ocean & Art

Today is craft focused and will introduce various mediums for creative expression. We will be making little shell notebooks, sea animal shaped crayons, and learning about flipbook animation!

Nov 15/16 - Life In The Ocean

We will be learning what it takes to survive as a little salmon in the ocean by playing board games! A fun send off for the final day of our club.
