Weekly Themes

Week 1 (April 14-15-16 ) – Spring Plankton Tow
To celebrate the first week of the spring program, we will head to the Discovery Pier with our plankton net to find out what new microscopic critters have shown up in our waters over the winter. Once we have collected our samples, we will head back to the Explorer Lab to look at our findings under the microscope and to do a fun plankton craft.

Week 2 (April 21-22-23) – The Titanic and Maritime Heritage
This weeks theme comes at the request of the winter after school club. We will dive into the most notorious shipwrecks in recent times through crafts and underwater ROV footage. OF course, we could resist a Campbell River connection so we will be visiting the Maritime Heritage Centre to learn more about the rich history of sea-faring right here in Campbell River.

Week 3 (April 28-29-30) – Sea STARS!
This week we will learn about one of the most familiar intertidal species. How they move, eat, and even... race? You heard that right! We will be conducting our very own science experiment in the form of sea star races! Get ready to learn more about your favourite iconic invertebrate.

Week 4 (May 5-6-7) – Help with Aquarium Collections: Beach Seine
Have you ever visited the aquarium and wondered how on earth (or sea) we collect the animals? This week, you can find out and even join in as we conduct a beach seine at the Explorer Lab beach. From red rock crabs to flatfish, who knows what we can find.

Note: Children will be viewing the beach seine from the shore and will not be going in the water themselves or personally handling animals. Gumboots strongly recommended.

Week 5 (May 12-13-14) – Who is new in the AQ
This week, we will get exclusive access to view the aquarium as VIPs before the exhibits open to the public. Get a sneak peak of the new tanks and be the first to meet our new team of animal friends.

Scheduled themes subject to change based on weather and other environmental factors.
