The Discovery Passage Aquarium is Offering Mini-Science Camps in Late August!

Come join the Discovery Passage Aquarium team for our Mini Science Camps at the Explorer Lab! Over the course of two days, our campers will learn about local marine species, basic ecology, and participate in ethical behavioral experiments!

Camp will be from 9 am – 3 pm each day and are open for participants aged 7-12.

Day 1:

  • 9:00AM – Sign in & Drop off
  • 9:30AM – Icebreaker Games
  • 10:00AM – Species Showcase
    • A case study of several aquarium animals in the Explorer Lab
  • 11:00AM – Craft Activity
  • 12:00PM – Beach Exploration/Lunch Break
    • study of marine species found in the local intertidal zone around the aquarium
    • Collection of species for next day’s experiments
  • 1:00PM – Plankton Tow
    • The collection and study of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton under the microscope
  • 2:00PM – Outside Games
  • 2:30PM – Aquarium visit and Pickup

Day 2:

  • 9:00AM – Sign in & Drop off
  • 9:15AM – Sea star Mobility Experiment (Part 1)
    • We will be testing various species of sea star to see how quickly they can flip themselves over when placed upside down. Campers will come up with a hypothesis on which species will right themselves the fastest and why.
  • 10:00AM – Aquarium Scavenger Hunt
    • A hunt for species in the aquarium based on hints given out by the Aquarium Staff
  • 11:00AM – Sea star Mobility Experiment (Part 2)
    • We will execute the experiment and time each individual animal and come up with theories that explain our results.
  • 12:00PM – Lunch Break on the Pier
    • We will bring over an underwater camera to the Discovery Pier to study the marine life that lives below. Campers will be provided a small sample of their favourite ice cream from the concession stand.
  • 1:00PM – Craft Activity
    • The collection and study of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton under the microscope
  • 2:00PM – Camper’s Choice (Species showcase or outside games)
  • 2:45PM – Aquarium visit and Pickup
