Octopus day (Oct. 8) is fitting start to our ten weeks of after school explorers club meetings. This week we will learn about Giant Pacific Octopus and then head to the aquarium to see what has changed over the summer.

Week 2 (Oct 13/14/15) - Arctic Science with Gina Nickoloff

This week, University of Calgary PhD student, Gina Nickoloff, will join us to speak about her research on Arctic oceanography. We will learn about Icebergs, the Arctic Circle, and even polar bears!

Week 3 (Oct 20/21/22) - Ocean pollution beach cleanup

This week, we will participate in a beach cleanup to learn about caring for and protecting our local environment. With gloves and tongs, children will only collect litter from a teacher-approved list that we will review carefully together before heading outside. Any items that are sharp, hazardous, or not on our approved list will be left untouched and brought to the attention of an adult.

Week 4 (Oct 27/28/29) - Halloween Kelp-o-lanterns

This week, we celebrate Halloween with an ocean twist. Rather than carving Jack-o-lanterns, we will carve… Kelp-o-lanterns. Costumes are encouraged!

Week 5 (Nov 3/4/5) - Ocean and Art

Science meets creativity! This week we will make an ocean-themed arts and crafts project and celebrate the long-standing connection between science and art.

Week 6 (Nov 10/9*/12) - Feed Me!

This week, we will investigate how a variety of marine creatures find and consume food in the intertidal zone. We will observe live animals to see what we can learn about their feeding habits, and maybe even touch some if we are lucky!

Week 7 (Nov. 17/18/19) - Sharks, Sharks, Sharks!

This week we will learn about the 14 species of sharks found in BC waters. We will dive in deep with these misunderstood creatures and learn about their diverse habitats, biology and lifecycles.

This week we will learn all about our fuzzy marine friends: Otters, Seals and Sea Lions. How do these charismatic marine mammals fit into the ocean ecosystems?

Week 9 (Dec. 1/2/3) - All about Rockfish
